Why Pray?
- So Samuel went and lay down in his place. The Lord came and stood there, and called, "Samuel, Samuel," as before. Samuel answered,"Speak; thy servant hears thee." The Lord said, "Soon I shall do something in Israel which will ring in the ears of all who hear it," - 1 Samuel 3:9-11
A frequently asked question is, "Why bother praying if God is going to do whatever God wants anyway?" Here are some thoughts on why we need to pray:
- We are created by God for the sake of an interdependent relationship with God. We have the responsibility and authority to carry out God's plan. Prayer reinforces our dependence on God for everything.
- God needs us to pray. God chose, from the beginning of Creation, to work on earth through humans, not independent of them. If God is to intercede in human affairs, if God is to continue to bring the creative power of love and justice into our lives, God needs us to pray and to act.
- Body of Christ. Christ is the head and we are the body. How can hands do anything without the mind telling it? Prayer enables the church to communicate with and understand the will of God.
- Prayer is an expectation of Christ in the Church. Jesus said," and when you pray..." in Matthew 6:5, not "if" you pray. When we pray we offer ourselves to God. We become agents of God's acts in new ways because we pray.
